Salman Ali Agha, the captain of Pakistan's T20 team, is hopeful that star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi will be able to recover fully from his knee injury and play in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

While fielding for his team, the Brisbane Heat, in the Big Bash League, Shaheen sustained a knee injury. He was summoned back for rehabilitation by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Salman told the media in Dambulla, where Pakistan will play Sri Lanka in the first Twenty20 International on Wednesday, "We are hopeful he will be fit for the World Cup but the final decision will come from the (Pakistan Cricket) Board on advice from the medical panel."

Shaheen is presently undergoing rehabilitation in Lahore. The PCB's medical panel at the High Performance Center is overseeing his rehabilitation.

The Pakistan Board posted a video of the pacer undergoing rehabilitation on Wednesday, but it made no mention of the severity of his injury or when he will be fully recovered.

Shaheen's past knee problems

Meanwhile, Shaheen has previously sustained a knee injury. He was sidelined for several months after experiencing the same issue in 2022 while fielding in a Test match against Sri Lanka. Additionally, he had missed the first part of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Shaheen will be a vital component for Pakistan in the global tournament in India and Sri Lanka in just one month, so they will be hoping he returns to full fitness.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka are engaged in a pivotal Twenty20 International series. Before the World Cup begins on February 7, this is their last Twenty20 International match.

For players who don't have much experience playing in Sri Lanka, this series will be very helpful for the World Cup.

Khawaja Nafay is the only uncapped player Pakistan has selected for the three-match series against Sri Lanka.

The seasoned all-rounder's return to the national squad after an eight-month hiatus due to shoulder surgery is the main highlight.

Shadab's performance in the Big Bash League in December earned him a recall.
