Update on the release of Jana Nayagan: The Madras High Court's ruling in the censorship case involving the Vijay film

After failing to obtain a clearance certificate from the CBFC, the Tamil action thriller Jana Nayagan was postponed from its initial January 9 release date.
In delivering the verdict, Justice PT Asha reportedly stated, "After examining the materials, it is crystal clear that the complainant's grievance appears to be an afterthought." This was reported by Live Law.

On January 9, 2026, the Madras High Court rendered its decision regarding the censorship of Thalapathy Vijay's film Jana Nayagan. The complainant's complaint seemed to be an afterthought, the court noted after reviewing the materials on file. The court also warned that accepting these complaints might start a risky trend.
Accepting such complaints, according to the court, could result in a "dangerous trend."
The film's producer, KVN Productions, represented by Venkata K. Narayana, clarified that on December 22, they received a letter from the Regional Office informing them that the Examining Committee had suggested awarding a "UA" certificate for the film, provided that specific edits and modifications were made.
They added that these changes were finished, and on December 29, the Regional Office notified them that the film would receive the UA certificate after it was resubmitted.
The Hindi title of Jana Nayagan was revealed.
According to a report by industry tracker Sacnilk, Zee Studios will distribute Vijay's Jana Nayagan in Hindi, and it will be released widely rather than in a select few theaters. The movie is called Jan Neta in Hindi. The film directed by H Vinoth will be dubbed into Hindi for North Indian viewers.
